Muppets version of Rock 'n' Roller Coaster: First reviews and hidden secrets at DHS!

The opening of the brand new version of Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at Disney's Hollywood Studios (DHS) is generating immense excitement among fans! Designed in a record time of less than three months after the closure of the Aerosmith version in March, this reinvention led by Walt Disney Imagineering infuses a good dose of chaos and nostalgia into the famous roller coaster. At Park Trips, our expert eye has examined the first visitor feedback and the attraction's well-kept secrets.

What Stands Out: A Memorable Pre-Show and Top Replayability

  • The Revolutionary Scooter Audio-Animatronic: This is the unanimous highlight for early visitors. Designed using motion capture technology based on a real puppeteer's performance, its expressions and movements are strikingly fluid and realistic.
  • Penguins in Charge: Two sound engineer penguins (repurposed or inspired by Muppet Vision 3D) manage the mixing console alongside him.
  • Massive Media Content: The queue room broadcasts an original stream with over 30 minutes of never-before-seen footage shot with the Muppets and celebrity cameos (like John Stamos).
  • Infinite Replayability: The pre-show features several random variations with surprise appearances by Gonzo, the Swedish Chef, Miss Piggy, or Uncle Deadly.

Must-See Easter Eggs to Spot

The queue and the ride are a true love letter to Muppets history. Here are the essential gems not to miss on your next ride:

  • Original Muppet Show Guitars: In Yolanda's display case, four guitars in the center – those of Floyd and Janice – are genuine historical pieces used in the original The Muppet Show.
  • Ken Marino's Return: The iconic audio technician from the 1999 Aerosmith pre-show makes a comeback as a portrait, having been promoted to a manager at GeForce Records. A fantastic nod to the old version!
  • Muppet Vision 3D Recycling: Upon arrival, the seats from which the famous Statler and Waldorf address you are the actual seats salvaged from the former 3D cinema. Additionally, the portrait of Jim Henson that graced the original pre-show has been placed just above the unloading area.

First Feedback on What Could Be Improved

To ensure a rigorous analysis, several friction points were noted by early testers:

  • Exterior Facade Considered Too Dull: The dark gray and black tones chosen for the exterior building (nicknamed "go away gray") lack some of the warmth and colorful dynamism characteristic of Electric Mayhem.
  • Visibility Issues at the Back of the Pre-Show: The intimate layout of the room means that visitors at the back miss a large part of Scooter's animatronic's physical performance, which is obscured by the crowd.
  • Some Ride Sections Feel Empty: The first 10 to 15 seconds after the 92 km/h launch occur in near-total darkness. Furthermore, the use of flat cardboard cutouts for the rest of the course sometimes gives an impression of a limited budget.
  • Intensity Not Suited to the Target Audience: The physical coaster remains the same: vibrating, rough, and intense, with inversions and high G-forces. This is the great paradox of this rehabilitation: the Muppets universe attracts an intergenerational family audience who may not necessarily be able to physically handle the attraction.

Conclusion

Despite these few technical compromises inherent in such a rapid construction, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets stands out as a superb celebration of this cult universe. The Imagineers' love for these characters shines through in every corner, making the visual and nostalgic experience a must-do for all enthusiasts!
