Specifically designed for kids aged 3 to 9 and their families, this park offers a kid-sized experience without neglecting parents. We broke down the first wave of feedback from this new resort, which officially opened its doors on July 1, 2026. Did Universal deliver? Let's take a closer look inside.
A Unique Concept: Less Walking, Just as Much Magic
Unlike the massive complexes in Orlando or Hollywood, Universal Kids Resort features a manageable, boutique scale. The goal is to prevent toddlers from burning out after miles of walking, while still delivering immersive quality on par with Epic Universe. The park directly connects to its own themed hotel, allowing families to jump from the park to a nap or a pool break in less than two minutes. This provides an essential comfort barrier when managing fatigue under the intense Texas sun.
The layout features 7 themed lands inspired by major franchises from DreamWorks, Illumination, and Nickelodeon.
The Lands Tour: Your Favorite Heroes at Eye Level
1. Gabby’s Isle of Curiosity
This serves as the park's main entryway. Inspired by the colorful world of Gabby’s Dollhouse, this land hosts the resort's massive flagship store, the Universal Kids Cafe, and Cakey’s Cupcakes (where the treats feature a full explosion of confetti and sprinkles). This is also the primary spot to catch Gabby and her feline friends for unscheduled dance-alongs.
2. Minions Versus Minions: Bellow Bay
This area functions as a heavy splash zone. The land stages a clash between the classic yellow Minions and the destructive purple ones.
The signature attraction: Bellow Bay Cruise, a water-based splash ride that sends boats through a central whirlpool, leaving riders completely soaked. It is an effective option to counter the Texas heat.
The area also features Bellow Bay Golf Cart Derby, a compact flat spinner styled as minion golf carts that moves significantly faster than it appears from the midway.
3. DreamWorks Trolls Fest
The most energetic and music-driven land in the park. The environments feature bright, glittering decor with a continuous pop soundtrack.
Rhonda’s Trollfest Express: A junior roller coaster ideal for a child's very first coaster experience. The layout is short, smooth, and approachable.
Sparkle Shine Glitter & Glow: A premium, paid immersive experience where kids can get "Trollified" with full glitter makeup and hair accessories to look like Princess Poppy or Branch.
4. DreamWorks Shrek’s Swamp
A direct recreation of the famous ogre's bog. The area includes several interactive water play zones (Swamp Splash and Smash) topped by a massive tipping water bucket. It also features a slow-moving outdoor track ride, Shrek & Fiona’s Happily Ogre After, which delivers a simple story walk-through inside small wooden wagons.
5. Delmare (Puss in Boots)
Directly adjacent to the swamp, this Spanish-style village focuses entirely on Puss in Boots.
Swings over Delmare: A wave swinger ride detailed like a vintage carousel. This is easily the most thrilling ride in the park, offering enough speed and elevation to satisfy adult riders.
The land also includes a live puppet show at the Puss in Boots Theater, utilizing excellent practical special effects and humor.
6. Jurassic World Adventure Camp
Targeted at young dinosaur enthusiasts, this land draws its theme primarily from the Camp Cretaceous series.
Jurassic World Cretaceous Coaster: The largest and fastest roller coaster in the park. It remains a highly accessible family coaster, featuring a physical animatronic of Bumpy the dinosaur in the final brake run.
The zone also incorporates a large rope climbing infrastructure (Lookout Towers) and educational sensory gardens equipped with working zoetropes.
7. Nickelodeon SpongeBob SquarePants Bikini Bottom
An underwater-themed area built around a major water playground near SpongeBob’s pineapple house. Key rides include Mrs. Puff’s Boating School, a flat wave-spinner that mimics ocean motion, and Bobbing Barrels, a splash ride outfitted with onboard water cannons allowing riders and onlookers to blast each other.
A Serious Upgrade: Theme Park Dining Done Right
Food and beverage stands out as a major highlight at Universal Kids Resort. Rather than relying on standard, generic theme park chicken tenders, Universal applied the elevated culinary strategy seen at Epic Universe. The menus are varied, heavily themed, and surprisingly high quality.
At Trolls Eats, choices include the Cheeseburger Pizza (complete with lettuce, special sauce, and pickles) or a barbecue pizza topped with crunchy Fritos.
The quick-service Mexican location, Come y Leche (located in the Puss in Boots section), serves Commandantes Flautas—crispy fried flour tortillas stuffed with seasoned beef and cheese, offering a substantial portion size and restaurant-grade quality.
Over at the Jurassic World Canteen, the Empanada Dog (a beef hot dog sliced inside a seasoned beef empanada, topped with garlic aioli and fresh pico de gallo) is a standout item for adults. The location also offers high-quality healthy alternatives, such as a grilled steak bowl with chimichurri or a marinated chicken skewer bowl.
For a unique snack, SpongeBob’s Cheesy Press delivers a large, salted pretzel grilled cheese shaped exactly like SpongeBob.
The Park Trips Verdict: Is It Worth It?
The Highlights:
- Excellent Adult Accessibility: Adults can ride almost every single attraction alongside their children. Universal doubled up on seatbelts and expanded vehicle dimensions so parents can sit comfortably without tight clearance issues.
- Outstanding Team Member Engagement: The local staff delivers warm, genuine Texas hospitality that feels highly attentive and natural, rather than forced.
- Confidence Builder: This is an ideal introductory park. It offers a low-stress environment for children to experience their first roller coaster or water drop, building up their confidence before transitioning to larger destination resorts.
Areas for Improvement:
- Severe Lack of Shade: This is the park's primary operational flaw. The landscaping consists of young, newly planted trees that do not yet provide a canopy. Under the direct Texas sun, shade is scarce during peak midday hours despite the presence of high-powered fans and misting systems in the queues. Universal needs to add permanent solid canvas structures over the outdoor dining terraces to block the sun completely.
