The history of Puy du Fou began in 1978 with the creation of the Cinescénie by Philippe de Villiers. This night show is unique in that it is performed by thousands of volunteers, called the Puyfolais, on a huge outdoor stage depicting the history of Vendée through the centuries. Following the success of the Cinescénie, the Grand Parc du Puy du Fou opened its doors in 1989. It offers daytime shows and reconstructed historical villages, this time managed by professionals. Over the decades, the park has experienced continuous expansion, adding new shows, thematic zones, and hotels to become a true tourist complex. Its economic and artistic model has also been exported with international projects.

The main offering of Puy du Fou lies in the Grand Parc. This park features a multitude of large-scale daytime shows portraying various historical periods, such as gladiatorial combat, knight jousting, Viking attacks, or birds of prey ballets. In parallel, the park invites visitors to wander through faithfully reconstructed historical villages, such as a medieval city, an 18th-century village, or a 1900s market town, brought to life by artisans and extras. Accommodation options have developed around the site with thematic hotels allowing for an extended immersion, inspired, for example, by a Gallo-Roman villa, a medieval castle, or an 18th-century residence. Puy du Fou is located in the Vendéen bocage (hedged farmland), near the commune of Les Epesses. The surrounding region is characterized by a rural, hilly, and green landscape, typical of inland Vendée. There are few large urban areas in the immediate vicinity, as the park is located in a rather isolated setting. However, the geographical location allows for relatively easy access from several cities in Western France via motorway. Although Vendée is also known for its Atlantic coast, Puy du Fou is not located by the sea, the coast being accessible by car after a journey of a good hour or more depending on the exact destination on the coast.
