October 3, 2025, will mark a memorable day for amusement park enthusiasts and families seeking unforgettable adventures. After years of planning and construction, the brand-new indoor park, Bommelwereld, will finally open its doors in Groenlo, Netherlands. Promised as a "very special" project by its creators, Bommelwereld is not just a new amusement park; it's a vibrant tribute to Dutch cultural heritage, transforming a beloved comic book universe into a life-sized immersive experience.
A Visionary Collaboration
The park is the result of a visionary collaboration between the Marveld Recreatie holiday park and renowned designers Jora Vision. First announced in 2022, the project generated great excitement, and for good reason. It is rare for a brand new amusement park to be built from scratch in the Netherlands, a country already known for its theme park density. Peter van der Schans, Executive Director and Vice President of IAAPA EMEA, emphasized this point, noting that "it's a rare event for a completely new amusement park to be built." For the design teams, this project is therefore a unique opportunity to showcase their talent, moving "from the drawing board to a themed set," as explained by Sjors van Roosmalen, Creative Director at Jora Vision.
Bommelstein Castle and its Themed Worlds
Spanning 9,000 square meters, Bommelwereld is entirely housed within an imposing 23-meter-high castle, named Bommelstein. This castle is not just a mere facade; it is the heart of the park, a majestic entrance that leads visitors into a fantastical world inspired by the books of the illustrious Dutch cartoonist Maarten Toonder. The universe focuses on the adventures of Olivier B. Bommel and Tom Poes, two iconic characters from local popular culture. Visitors will not simply enter a park, they will enter a narrative, with distinct themed areas that bring the locations from Toonder's world to life, such as the City of Rommeldam, the Black Mountains, or the Circus area.
Attractions for the Whole Family
Among the 20 attractions the park will offer, several stand out and are already highly anticipated. One of the main attractions is undoubtedly the family roller coaster "Bulderbaan". With a length of 257 meters, this runaway train-type ride will reach a speed of 45 km/h and take passengers on a thrilling adventure through the Black Mountains area. A promotional video recently featured the characters Olivier B. Bommel and Tom Poes testing the ride, one finding it "a bit scary" and the other "enthusiastic" and ready for another go. In addition to the Bulderbaan, those who prefer gentler thrills can enjoy the "Razende Rommel" mini flume ride. This water ride, which will reach a height of four meters, promises fun splashes for the whole family. The park also includes a variety of other rides, such as bumper cars, a carousel, mini-jet type rides like the "Daverend Draken Spektakel", and a drop tower called "Protonen Spitz". For those who prefer a more interactive approach, the "Klauter Magazijn" will offer a climbing and adventure course, while other interactive games and rides will be scattered throughout the different areas.
Complete Experience and Accommodations
The experience will not stop at the rides. Bommelwereld will also be a place of entertainment and culture. The park will house a theater where the comic book characters will come to life during shows. For dining, the Cant & Claer restaurant will offer a variety of dishes, with a modern ordering system.
For visitors coming from afar, the park is easily accessible. Furthermore, it is possible to extend the adventure by staying in the vicinity. The 5-star holiday park Marveld Recreatie, located right next door, offers luxury bungalows. From January 5, 2026, access to Bommelwereld will even be included in bungalow or hotel stays, thus offering a perfect transition between relaxation and adventure.
Bommelwereld is much more than just an amusement park. It is a complete destination that celebrates art and imagination, promising a day of wonder and entertainment for the whole family. The park's opening on October 3, 2025, is the culmination of an ambitious project that pays tribute to a precious cultural heritage while offering a modern and exciting leisure experience.
