A year ago, Efteling fairy tale park inaugurated its most recent and impressive creation: Danse Macabre. Far from being a simple addition to its catalog of attractions, this ambitious work took on the monumental challenge of succeeding the revered Spookslot (the Haunted Castle), an institution that has marked generations of visitors. Today, as Danse Macabre celebrates its first anniversary, we lift the veil on the secrets of its design and share our full review, formed during our immersion in the park for New Year's 2025.
We delve behind the scenes of this extraordinary project to understand how Efteling transformed an emotional challenge into a spectacular success.
The Weight of Heritage: Transforming Emotion into Anticipation
The announcement of Spookslot's departure had naturally stirred up an intense wave of emotion among fans. We now know, thanks to revelations from the design teams, how heavy the responsibility was. The attachment was such that petitions garnered up to 5,000 signatures in a single day, and heritage associations came forward. This was not a simple change; it was a historic succession.
Faced with this fervor, Efteling chose a remarkable strategy: total transparency and early communication. Their goal was not to erase the past, but to embark us on the creation of the future. The team produced a plethora of content to keep us informed: a complete eight-episode "Making Of" series, a cinematic commercial, and over 350 social media posts. They succeeded in making us participate, not just informing us.
This ambition translated into the bold choice of a unique transport system. While a classic ghost train was initially considered, Efteling quickly understood that they needed to make a strong impact and offer something unprecedented. Thus, the concept of the rotating platform was born. Visitors are seated on benches, and the entire room moves, shifts, and trembles, literally making us "dance" to the rhythm of the music. This choice positions Danse Macabre as a leading immersive and sensory experience.
Total Immersion: The Secrets of Huiverwoud
Danse Macabre is much more than an attraction; it's the heart of a brand new themed area, Huiverwoud (the Shivers Wood), whose atmosphere is perfectly mastered. The team introduced the Charlatan Family – Otto, Virginie, and their relatives – to create unparalleled narrative coherence. Their presence was ensured from the very beginning, even before opening, with their organ, Esmeralda, which quickly became a celebrity even receiving fan mail! Today, park employees continue to play along, adopting deliberately mysterious behavior to immerse us in the strange and deliciously uncomfortable atmosphere of the place.
The architectural authenticity is simply stunning. To give the new building the appearance of an ancient ruin, the designers showed incredible determination. We discovered that the bricks, although chosen for their aged appearance, still looked too new. The project team then made the radical decision to hammer the corners of all the facade stones to recreate the wear and tear of time and enhance the ruin effect. It's this level of detail that makes all the difference.
Even the shop, Dr. Charlatans Kwalycke Zaken (Dr. Charlatan's Maleficent Affairs), is an immersive success. It is Efteling's very first officially "scary" shop. And in an approach that is both sustainable and thematic, it was furnished with reclaimed furniture: the magnificent display cabinets come from an old castle in Italy, and many decorative objects are reused vintage pieces. The little black cat, a nod to the attraction, is also one of the park's five best-selling products, proof of the impact of this new universe.
Finally, we love the artistic choice not to reveal everything. At the beginning of the show, when the little kitten transforms under the effect of lightning, the team deliberately chose not to show us the Monster Cat. We hear and feel it moving around us, leaving it to our imagination to create the scariest possible creature. It's a brilliant technique, worthy of a great horror film, that maximizes the thrill effect.
A Memorable Opening: The Triumph of Team Spirit
Behind the brilliance of the inauguration lies a suspenseful anecdote. Stress peaked less than two days before opening, when the platform's mechanical system stubbornly refused to function correctly. The team had set a 6:00 PM deadline before considering a postponement. Fortunately, after hours of hard work, the machine finally started doing what it was supposed to at 8:30 PM, unleashing a well-deserved wave of euphoria and relief.
D-Day, October 31st, was a resounding success. We learned that the queue stretched all the way to Aquanura, forcing the information system to contend with an estimated waiting time of 320 minutes – a record for Efteling! The opening was a true testament to team spirit. Staff came to reinforce, and employees from different departments even rushed to create new waiting time cards. It was this synergy that allowed them to manage this record crowd.
The success has never waned. Visitor feedback is incredibly positive, speaking of a "fantastic" and "moving" experience. And perhaps the finest compliment is the enduring phenomenon: visitors regularly applaud at the end of the show!
Park Trips' Review: A Spectacular Success to Rediscover
At Park Trips, we had the chance to discover Danse Macabre during the special New Year's 2025 event. We were immediately impressed by the majesty of the building and the quality of immersion in the queue, which leads us through a magnificently themed cloister and cemetery.
We were particularly sensitive to how intelligently the attraction reincorporates references to Spookslot. It's a true feast of details for connoisseurs. The unique platform system is brilliant for its fluidity and ability to manage flow. The universe, the sets, and the music are simply magnificent and perfectly mastered.
Admittedly, during our first immersion, some of us expected a "punch" or a slightly longer moment, having set the bar of expectation very high. However, we quickly tempered this initial impression by recognizing the brilliant balance Efteling managed to strike in offering a quality family experience. The show is accessible, but without ever sacrificing beauty and intensity.
Moreover, as proof of Danse Macabre's excellence, we experienced it a second time on the same evening. It is often during the second ride that one perceives all the subtleties, and our second visit was even more appreciated, allowing us to discern the smallest details of the decor that we had missed.
Danse Macabre is a total triumph. It is an original, immersive, technically impressive attraction and a worthy successor to Spookslot. Efteling managed to listen to its fans, exceed initial expectations, and deliver an experience that moves us and makes us dance. It is a success that confirms Efteling's place at the top of European theme parks.
We strongly encourage you to come and discover the macabre magic of Danse Macabre!
